Principles of Architectural Design

Course - 110103 PRINCIPLES OF ARCHITECTURE AND CONSTRUCTION (13004200)

Grades 9 - 12         Prerequisite - None

The Principles of Architectural Design is an introductory course that is available for all students in grades 10 thru 12.  There is no prerequisite to take this course, although for the pathway and endorsement of Business and Industry students are required to have a fines arts credit, so we recommend they take ART class their freshman year.  Students should have completed or be enrolled in Geometry to help them as well. The course will give a general introduction regarding the disciplines of architecture, interior design, and construction.  If you have any questions regarding this course please contact your counselor or instructor.

Business Etiquette

Business etiquette is not just knowing what to discuss during a business dinner or how to address colleagues; it is a way of presenting yourself in such a way that you will be taken seriously. This involves demonstrating that you have the self-control necessary to be good at your job, expressing a knowledge of business situations and having the ability to make other comfortable around you. Poor business etiquette can cost you the trust of your workers and your customers, and the loss of valuable business opportunities.

Unit 1 - Students will begin to learn what are soft skills.  We will discuss the impact of first impressions, body language, verbal communication, networking, to name a few.  We will role play certain scenarios to illustrate the mistakes people make in the workplace.  Students will learn what are their personal strengths and weaknesses.  We will discuss and learn the positives and negatives of using social media.  Week 1 is a mixture of lectures, student led discussions, student presentations to meet and to know our fellow students and instructor.  Grades will be given for participation.

We will discuss Courtesy, Networking, Communication, Dress Attire and Appearance, Peers/Subordinates/Superiors.

Introduction of Architecture

The objective of this lecture is to provide a broad overview of the discipline of architecture: its history, theories, methodologies; its manners of thinking and working. Rather than a chronological survey, the course will be organized thematically, with examples drawn from a range of historical periods as well as contemporary practice. Through lectures, readings, and discussions every student will acquire a working knowledge of key texts, buildings and architectural concepts.

Unit 2 - Using the information from the week before students will begin to learn how to write a resume.  Students will learn the anatomy of creating a resume and a cover letter.  Students will create a resume that can be used to find a job or can be used for college application.  We will discuss how to prepare ourselves for an interview and how to interview for a job position.  We will have mock interviews in class.  Grades will be given for a completed resume and for class preparation in the mock interviews.

Introduction of Interior Design

Interior Design is a field that blends creative expression with practical application. This lecture introduces the profession, its history, and its related specialties and disciplines. Slide-illustrated lectures and discussions help you develop an awareness of the basic principles of design and aesthetics by studying the work of past and present designers and architects.  

 

Many people use the terms "interior design" and "interior decorating" interchangeably, but these professions differ in critical ways.

Interior design is the art and science of understanding people's behavior to create functional spaces within a building. Decoration is the furnishing or adorning of a space with fashionable or beautiful things. In short, interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design.

Education of an Architect and Interior Designer

Students will learn the requirements needed to become a registered architect and licensed interior designer.  We will learn about the NAAB, NCARB, AIA, and the ARE Exams required for all registered architect.  Students wanting to become interior designers will learn abou the ASID and NCIDQ Exam. We introduce AutoCAD to 1st Year Students to prep them for inputting their As-Builts into AutoCAD as well as introduce them to concepts that will be used in the industry as well as the AutoCAD Certification Exam in Year 2.

Professional Practice for Architecture and Interior Design

Students will explore the practical aspects of the business of design, including business formats, firm structure, creating a business plan and marketing plan, the legal aspects of the profession, fee estimating, proposal writing, collecting fees, record keeping, and ways to limit your liability. The role of project management and the duties of the project manager are also addressed

Reading Construction Documents

Interior architects and designers must be able to communicate their design to contractors. This course introduces a process through which ideas can be documented. By producing a complete and correct set of working drawings, from plans through details and specifications, you gain an understanding of this process and prepare the documents necessary for the construction phase of a project

Unit 6 -   Students will begin with Warm Up Sketches (Assignments Sections) 12-15 min. using the 10|1|10 technique.

1st Year Students will begin inputting their As-Builts into AutoCAD as well as introduce them to concepts that will be used in the industry as well as the AutoCAD Certification Exam in Year 2.

Introduction to Construction Industry

Characteristics of the construction industry; types of construction companies; contracts; people involved in a project, their responsibilities and interrelationships; evolution of a project; interpreting working drawings; construction bonds; contract documents.

Construction Materials and Method

Materials, methods and sequences of the construction process; emphasis on design, specification, purchase and use of concrete, masonry and wood.  Analysis of materials and methods used in the design and construction of buildings with a particular emphasis on structures using structural steel reinforced concrete and dimensional framing lumber.

Introduction to the physical principles that govern classical statics and strengths of materials through the design of timber and steel components of architectural structures
