Architectural Design

Course - 110113 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN (13004600)

Grades 10 - 12        Prerequisite - Algebra 1, Geometry, and Principles of Architecture and Construction

Architectural Design gives students a taste of architectural school.  Students will learn the basic principles of architectural design, architectural history and theory, AutoCAD/SketchUp, and will enter a design competition. If you have any questions regarding this course please contact your counselor or instructor.

Course Objectives

Introduction of Architecture

The objective of this course is to provide a broad overview of the discipline of architecture: its history, theories, methodologies; its manners of thinking and working. Rather than a chronological survey, the course will be organized thematically, with examples drawn from a range of historical periods as well as contemporary practice. Through lectures, readings, and discussions every student will acquire a working knowledge of key texts, buildings and architectural concepts.

Architectural Sketching

These assignments begin by exploring sketch visualization techniques, progresses to simple one-point perspectives, and goes on to constructed two-point and advanced perspective techniques. Projects deal with mechanical perspective drawing and the perception of line, form, mass, volume, and proportion. Drawing techniques are introduced that add surface texture, tonality, reflections, and shades and shadows.

Architectural History, Theory, & Criticism

This course is a global-oriented survey of the history of architecture, starting from the late 1800's. It treats buildings and environments, including cities, in the context of the cultural and civilizational history. It offers an introduction to design principles and analysis. Being global, it aims to give the student perspective on the larger pushes and pulls that influence architecture and its meanings, whether these be economic, political, religious or climatic.

Principles and Elements of Design

Students will do projects that will provide an opportunity for you to explore and develop your creativity. You learn the principles—balance, harmony, rhythm, emphasis, contrast, and proportion—that are the foundation of good design, and you learn how these principles interact with the elements of scale, form, color, and texture.

AutoCAD (Technical Drawing)

Using AutoCAD and supplemented with hand sketches, these lessons develop your AutoCAD skills with an actual project. With one-on-one tutoring and practical hands-on assignments, see how far CAD can take your design project. The power of AutoCAD is in its efficiency and accuracy. Learn how to manage the software to quickly do studies and effectively develop drawings.

Reading Construction Documents

Interior architects and designers must be able to communicate their design to contractors. This course introduces a process through which ideas can be documented. By producing a complete and correct set of working drawings, from plans through details and specifications, you gain an understanding of this process and prepare the documents necessary for the construction phase of a project

Design Competition - Sponsored by the AIA (American Institute of Architects) Houston Chapter

An annual ideas competition with an emphasis on creative problem solving and graphic presentation, the Michael G. Meyers Design & Scholarship Competition is sponsored by the Architecture Center Houston Foundation, the Houston Chapter of AIA and local architectural firms and affiliates.  The Competition Committee hosts a series of events to help the students learn basic architectural design skills and understand the competition requirements. Projects are due in April and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at Architecture Center Houston. All Houston area high school students are eligible to participate regardless of class affiliation or age. Students are requested to enter only once per year as either a member of a team or as an individual.
